Could this feed someone else?
think before throwing away
A neighbour called me a few days ago.
He had been pruning and thinning his apple trees and wondered if our horses would like some apples. That alone made my day. It was such a thoughtful thing to do.
When I went to pick them up, he had carefully separated all the nice apples from the ones with bug holes.
Then he mentioned he’d already taken the “bad” ones to the compost pile at the dump.
and it got me thinking….
Those apples weren’t really bad.
Sure, I probably wouldn’t eat them. But pigs would. Chickens would happily peck through them too. Even if the apples had a few bug holes, they still had value.
Sometimes we forget that “not edible for us” doesn’t mean “waste.”
On a homestead, or even in a small community, food has a way of coming full circle. Apples feed chickens. Chickens lay eggs. Pigs turn scraps into meat. Compost feeds next year’s garden.
Very little has to be wasted if we stop thinking of food as only having one purpose.
It was just a small moment, but it reminded me that before throwing something away, it’s worth asking one simple question:
Could this feed someone, or something else?
Sometimes the best kind of sustainability isn’t complicated at all.
It’s just thinking one step further.
