A Little More Prepared

Being prepared just a little more

Our power went out for a short time today and thankfully it happened during daylight. But for the first time, we actually got to test the new backup system we recently had installed.

We had an electrician set up a subpanel connected to our generator so we could choose the things that really matter during a longer outage — our fridge, deep freezer, water, internet, my office and some lighting.

And today we got to see it work.

Honestly, it was awesome.

We weren’t trying to power the entire house or pretend nothing had happened. We just had the things we actually needed, and there was something incredibly reassuring about that.

It also ended up being a pretty reasonable upgrade for the amount of security and comfort it gives us.

This is the kind of self-reliance I actually believe in. Not trying to live without modern conveniences, but putting a few systems in place so when something stops working, life doesn’t immediately come to a halt.

Today it was only a short outage.

Next time it might not be.

And now we’re a little more ready for it.
